I’m Shehzar Abro, a Pakistani visual artist and animator based between Pakistan and Canada. My practice moves across image-making, animation, and public work, grounded in an ongoing interest in movement, performance, and cultural translation.

Through painting, animation, and drawing, I’m interested in how bodies, gestures, and familiar symbols carry emotional weight as they shift across cultures, media, and time. Much of my work centers on movement and stillness, on presence rather than representation, and on how images hold memory, tension, and meaning. Whether working in animation or paint, I approach image-making as a way of thinking through performance, identity, and place.

Alongside my independent practice, I’ve contributed to internationally distributed animation projects including Sausage Party: Foodtopia with Bardel Entertainment and Mia and Codie with Relish Studios. I’ve also held academic and staff roles at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and Alberta University of the Arts.

In 2022, I directed Now Showing, an artist film exploring performance and cultural translation through animation and staged imagery. The work was supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and developed in collaboration with Fight With A Stick Performance.

My public work includes murals, exhibitions, and civic projects across Canada, Pakistan, and Australia. This includes a commissioned mural for the High Commission of Pakistan in Australia, a mental health initiative developed with the Karachi Biennale at NJV School, and curatorial projects presented in collaboration with the Consulate General of Pakistan, Willoughby City Council, and Gallery ArtOne62.

My work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions, including a solo exhibition at Slice Gallery in Vancouver, and group exhibitions at The Reach Museum in British Columbia and the Arts Council of Karachi.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Media Arts from the University of the Fraser Valley, along with diplomas in 3D Animation from Vancouver Film School and SAE Institute Sydney. My work has been recognized through regional and institutional platforms, including Mississauga Arts Awards nominations in 2024 and 2025.
